Last night’s new episode ended up drawing as a whole a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is a rather-nice improvement from the past few episodes of the show. As a matter of fact, this marks the best performance from the series all season, which goes to show that it airing the night before Thanksgiving did not hurt it at all. More than anything, we think that Criminal Minds was probably aided by the fact that there was no Chicago PD airing on NBC. With all of that competition gone, this series was really able to capitalize and rise to the top.
If Criminal Minds were to draw a 0.9 rating the rest of the way this season, we’d feel very much confident that it would be coming back for another season. As it is, though, there is a reason to have a little bit of doubt and to raise a few questions. It’s just hard to gauge what CBS is going to do here, especially since they didn’t give Criminal Minds a full 22-episode season this time around in the first place and it doesn’t seem as though they are handing down any more beyond the fifteen that were already ordered. Even if we only get another shortened season next year, that’s better than getting no season at all. That’s why we personally encourage that viewers out there watch the series live if at all possible; that is, after all, the best way to ensure that there is a little bit more Criminal Minds at some other point down the road.
There are still many more important episodes coming for Criminal Minds down the road, so we are going to have a few different opportunities in order to check out stories in the weeks ahead. For now, we can kick back and celebrate the ratings rise … but there is still some more work to be done.
As for some other news worth noting…
Last night, SEAL Team improved slightly to finish with a 0.9 rating leading into Criminal Minds. Meanwhile, a new episode of Survivor ended up performing reasonably well with a 1.3 rating. (The overall victor of the night was A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, which ended up finishing with a 1.5 rating — these specials are the gift that keeps on giving.)
