Salvation canceled at CBS; season 3 not happening after ratings slip
Alas, there will not be any salvation for Salvation. Today, the news was first confirmed that CBS has officially canceled the scripted series after just two seasons on the air.
What’s the biggest reason for the show getting the ax? Well, it comes down to one thing more than anything else: The ratings. The numbers for season 2 were down by more than 35% in the 18-49 demographic versus season 1, and that’s with you factoring in that season 1 was considered to be very much a bubble show in its own right. While Salvation did have some good things going for it, whether it be a streaming deal or lower expectations as a whole, that wasn’t enough to save it.
The real shame in all of this is that the series is now officially ending with one of the biggest cliffhangers imaginable. It’s going to be rather-hard to fathom what could have been with a third season, given the absolutely-insane way the second season ended. As it turned out, the asteroid that was landing wasn’t actually an asteroid at all! This show really set itself up with an incredible ending, one that could have allowed for a really creative and interesting season 3 — especially if there were aliens or at least speculation about aliens. It could have been fun, and if nothing else would’ve been a bizarre, innovative twist that unfortunately, we’re now not going to get a chance to see.
If you look below, you can see the news via the show’s official writers that the show is ending — they send their best, and we certainly hope that there will be another opportunity for them elsewhere on some other shows. Few writers’ rooms consistently communicated with their fans as frequently as they did. We feel the same way for the cast — Ian Anthony Dale presumably has another gig lined up for him already, as he is a cast member over on Hawaii Five-0. This may allow for him to stick around later in the season, provided that is something that he wants, and be a larger part of the overall Five-0 family.
Is there a chance for a season 3 elsewhere?
It would be nice to think that there is a chance, but it feels very much unlikely just because there aren’t a lot of other realistic venues out there for it at the moment. CBS likely thought that the ratings were going to fall more in season 3, and if that happened, it probably would not be that financially viable elsewhere. While landing at another streaming service is certainly possible in theory, that is also not something that we would be particularly banking on when you think about the journey that we’ve had a chance to go on so far.
