Elseworlds teaser: First video footage of Ruby Rose’s Batwoman!

Batwoman

The CW made you wait for it, but during tonight’s new episode of Arrow, the first official look at Batwoman was revealed! This character will be featured in the upcoming Elseworlds crossover event, but at least you don’t have to wait in order to learn more about her.

So how does Ruby Rose look in the signature cowl and red hair? Pretty close to perfect for the part. While this preview is short and doesn’t give a whole lot away about the story, it does just enough to set up the overall mythology of this particular Gotham City. In this world, Batman seems to be missing and not everyone seems to believe in his existence. At one point, Oliver Queen / Barry Allen (who is it really? Stephen Amell is playing this iteration) said that Batman was only an urban legend; nobody even knew for sure that he was around.

Then, you see Batwoman uncover the signature bat-light, and all of a sudden, she is in business. This teaser suggests that even if this is not a full-on origin story, it will at least by something fairly close to that. This series will give you a chance to dive into some of Kate Kane’s early days as a masked vigilante in Gotham, a place in desperate need of one. What’s so interesting about this show is that while Gotham seems to be taking place before Batman, this show is taking place after Batman. With that, what villains are even still around? The Batwoman series will likely come up with some of her own adversaries, and take some from the comics at the same time. We’re expecting a combination that is in part similar to what we’ve seen already from Arrow, The Flash, and the remainder of the Arrowverse at large.

What matters most about this series, though, is not so much Batwoman herself; instead, it’s the story of Kate Kane and why she wears the cowl in the first place. Unless that is compelling, the remainder of the story isn’t going to work anywhere near as well. She has to be the compelling central figure since otherwise, it’s similar action to what we’ve seen on a number of other shows. Much like Arrow came up with a fantastic hook in the early going, the same exact thing can be said for what we get here.

Eventually, the arrival of Batwoman is going to lead to her getting her own spin-off series down the line. Yet, there is no precise timetable when it comes to that happening at the moment. We should find out more information over the next few weeks.
