Sunday night’s new episode, which featured a significant time jump and new stories for many of the characters, ended up generating a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic and almost 5.4 million viewers. At least in terms of live+same-day ratings, this is almost equal to the ratings for the prior week when Lincoln was in the cast. That’s pretty incredible, no? It at least means that AMC deserves a reasonable amount of credit for being able to keep their show interesting and for deciding not to kill Rick Grimes off at the end of The Walking Dead earlier this season. Keeping that character alive kept at least most of the fandom happy and there was a willingness in order to try the new version of the show.
What you have to wonder about at this point is simply this: Are there going to be more viewers who choose to call The Walking Dead their TV home for weeks to come? The first episode without Rick felt, at least to us, a little uneven. It didn’t feel like the writers completely had their footing just yet and some creative choices didn’t entirely work. Take, for example, trying to give the older version of Judith about a thousand different traits of Rick, Carl, and Michonne collectively all at once. Aging up this character was a bold move to give the show more of Rick’s presence, but there are certainly questions about how that’s going to play in the long-run.
On the flip side, there is still a good bit of curiosity likely coming in the form of Rick Jr., who we just discovered for the first time on this past episode. The kid is old enough in order for them to have their own personality and that definitely does allow the writers the chance to explore some super-fun material. There’s a lot to like about what seems to be coming at this point, so let’s just hope that creatively, it all pays out. AMC is investing a TON of money in this franchise to try and ensure that it is interesting / relevant for many more years moving forward. It just remains to be adequately seen whether or not that actually pays off.
