Madam Secretary season 5 episode 6 video: Turkey & the refugee crisis

Madam Secretary

Tomorrow night on CBS, Madam Secretary season 5 episode 6 is bringing you political discourse in a way you don’t often seen it. To be specific, it’s happening in an airport.

What’s going on in the sneak peek below? Well, it gives you a pretty good idea as to the conflict that Elizabeth McCord is facing — and some of the obvious challenges to go along with it. For starters, it looks as though she is intent on getting Turkey to open its borders after they made a decision to close them. What is going on here is the heart of a refugee crisis, one where Syrians are looking for an escape and the country is starting to turn them away. If that does happen, what that probably means is that many of these innocent people will find themselves murdered.

At the end of the sneak peek, it certainly does not look as though there is any reason to have hope for this crisis. Yet, sometimes hope can come via some rather surprising places. That’s why, later on in this episode, Bess could find her small glimmer of hope in the form of an airport. That’s where she will be stuck with the same Turkish foreign minister who turned her away in the sneak peek, and while there she can try to work in order to ensure that there’s a different result. Given that the minister is going to be stuck at said airport, that opens a window! Sometimes, you have to try and make the most of a tough situation, and for Elizabeth, that is precisely what she is looking at right now. She wants to find a way to climb out of this, if at all possible, and hopefully this episode gives her a great opportunity to take a big step forward with Turkey for a brighter future — but it’s going to take some concessions and negotiations.

Basically, the benefit for Elizabeth in succeeding in this goal is two-fold. There is a part of her mission here that is really all about just finding a way to help people who sorely need it. However, at the same time there is a larger, political push that could be important. If Elizabeth manages to succeed in her quest here, what that means is that she has a nice feather in her cap as she looks more and more towards a Presidential run. It is something that she can bring up throughout her campaign — an ability and a willingness to work with just about anyone.
