Midseason Preview: How Gotham season 5 is upping the ante
Welcome to the start of our CarterMatt Midseason Preview article series! Throughout the month of November, we will be taking a look at some of the most hotly-anticipated shows of the new year and why you should be excited for them to arrive. Given that the next couple of months are bringing you everything from Thanksgiving to the holiday season, this is typically the time of the year everyone wants to slow down and enjoy this fun time of the year, yet with shows like these coming back in the new year, it’s could have some fans wishing the holidays away to see what their favorite shows are going to bring!
Let’s kick things off today with a favorite of ours and that’s Gotham. Its upcoming fifth season is one that should push the superhero show to its limits. This is the final season (boo, hiss) so all bets are off, and you can bet that they are going to go out with the biggest bang that they can. The big thing to note here is that this is when we are going to see Bruce Wayne getting close to becoming Batman! So much of what we’ve seen for the past four seasons is going to be tied together in a way that is hopefully going to be satisfying for viewers – even if it may not be for all of the characters on the show.
Premiere date – Thursday, January 3 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time on Fox.
Why you should be excited – It’s a Batman show! Why shouldn’t you be excited? Gotham is picking things up in the aftermath of Jeremiah’s attempts to detonate the city, as the remaining residents are all starting to pick through the carnage and rebuild their lives. Alas, things are not going to be getting any easier. Most of the series’ notable villains are still out there being evil, and that includes everyone from the Penguin to Victor Szasz to Catwoman to of course the ever-changing chameleon-villain Barbara Kean. Meanwhile, Shane West is joining the series as Eduardo Dorrance, who could become eventually the series’ version of Bane. He will break someone’s back on this season, but it won’t be Bruce Wayne’s. Instead, Alfred is going to be in his cross-hairs, which we are excited for because we love a good Alfred story. Cameron Monaghan will also be back as Jeremiah, following the actor’s recent departure from Shameless after so many years. There’s also a new character coming (played by Jaime Murray) who is going to be an adversary of some sorts to Jim Gordon.
There are now twelve episodes following a recent extension to the episode order. At the tail end of this, prepare to see Bruce finally don the famous Batman cowl (albeit after a time jump) and see something more akin to the Batman story you know and love.
How can you prepare for it? – For starters, go watch the last four seasons and fall in love (if you haven’t already) with the awesome performances of Robin Lord Taylor and the rest of the cast. You can also take a look at the trailer below. While we think Gotham has a few secrets up its sleeve, it’s really hard to keep all spoilers at bay when you are telling a story based almost entirely on the comics.
