Is New Amsterdam new tonight? Talking the schedule + casting news!

Let’s go ahead and get the bad news out of the way right now: There is no New Amsterdam on the air tonight. Bad joke of the night: If New Amsterdam is not new, do we change the name to No Amsterdam?

Anyhow, the decision by NBC to not air a new episode is a frustrating but understandable one given that midterms are happening tonight and no one wants to compete with that. Not only that, but it feels like most of the election results will be coming out around the time that this show would be coming on the air. Imagine the immense frustration of trying to watch Max Goodwin save some lives only for someone to barge in and tell you political news that you may or may not want to hear. (Early prediction: There’s going to be a lot of work-week drinking tonight.)

So, while you wait, for New Amsterdam to return to the air next week, we do have some welcome news to report about Sendhil Ramamurthy — it may not make up for our sadness about Reverie getting canceled earlier today, but it’s still nice.

Per a report coming in via Deadline, the actor (whose credits also include Heroes as well as Beauty and the Beast) is going to be featured in a major recurring role. Given the specific nature of this show, can you really be shocked that he’s playing (drum roll please) … a doctor? Well, you shouldn’t be since this is a show all about doctors. Particularly good ones! They push medicine to its limit and join Max on his quest to challenge authority and make sure that the medical world is a better, happier place when all of the dust settles.

As it turns out, Ramamurthy is particularly well-versed in medicine already, as both his parents and his sister are doctors. Isn’t it nice to have some experience you can tap into? Technically, so was Sendhil’s Heroes character Mohinder Suresh was a doctor — a different kind of doctor, anyway.

New Amsterdam returns to the air with new episodes next week and potentially at least a couple more after that; while it’s awesome to be getting the news about Sendhil’s role now, odds are he won’t be featured for a little while still. Typically, networks aren’t so great at keeping casting news quiet so close to when episodes air.

What will you see next week?

Think along the lines of Max dealing with the aftermath of finally telling the truth to Georgia — you know, the news that he has cancer. News that he should have first relayed many weeks ago. Don’t you think that they’ve got some important stuff to talk about? There’s also the issue of whether or not Max actually survives, which is important but also potentially anticlimactic since NBC should be banned from killing off Ryan Eggold characters from two straight shows. If that happens, New Amsterdam should just be about Max’s ghost haunting the hospital while somehow trying to make it better.
