Is Designated Survivor season 3 perfect House of Cards follow-up?
Today, Netflix premiered House of Cards season 6, and this is going to be the end of the road for the series on the streaming service. It was one of their foundational series, and beyond that, it was one of the biggest political thrillers of its kind.
Yet, when one door closes, does another one open at Netflix? It does certainly seem that way at the moment when it comes to Designated Survivor season 3.
The third season of the formally-canceled ABC show is currently in production, and at the moment, we do think that there is certainly a lot of hope for the future here. For starters, Netflix offers up a platform in order to tell bigger, edgier stories than ever before. There are fewer restrictions, and while we don’t think that Designated Survivor is going to become a completely different series, at the same time there are probably going to be some more creative risks. This is a chance to tell a bigger, bolder story, and potentially even take on some rather-timely subjects in the process.
Beyond just that, we do think that one of the benefits of Designated Survivor season 3 is that it has a smaller episode order than at ABC. While that may sound counter-intuitive in a way, we think that the show is primed now to tell some stories that are a little bit more condensed and run more smoothly from one to the next. This is something that House of Cards benefited from for many years.
Given that Designated Survivor has a great lead in Kiefer Sutherland, a loyal audience, and a ton of creative potential, Netflix should strongly consider this their next great political show. House of Cards is ending, but there are some other successors waiting in the (west) wings.
