Is a Riverdale – Chilling Adventures of Sabrina crossover still possible?
Speaking while at New York Comic-Con (via Entertainment Weekly), executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa made it clear that originally, there was a plan to introduce Sabrina in the season 1 finale of Riverdale and then move the second season into more of a supernatural direction. However, that plan eventually changed and now Sabrina’s world is separate from anything going on with Archie. To make things more complicated, Riverdale is airing on The CW while Sabrina is an exclusive over at Netflix. It’s hard to do crossovers with two different shows when they are airing on different networks.
Yet, at least for the time being, Aguirre-Sacasa remains reasonably hopeful:
“I’m first and foremost a fan of these two towns, Riverdale and Greendale … I love when comic book characters cross over, so it’s a dream. Right now, we’re focused on getting Sabrina out there and making sure Riverdale is as good as it can be. So, I’m hopeful!”
If this sort of thing happens, odds are that it won’t be over the course of the next year — beyond just that, it is really hard to imagine it in a way where there is some sort of full-on crossover that impacts both shows at the same time. The release windows for that render it a little bit impossible. Instead, our expectation at the moment is that in the event this ever happens, it may via some sort of quick cameo or just an Easter egg to excite many longtime viewers out there. Sometimes, you don’t really need to force the issue, especially when you are thinking about one show being set in a grounded universe while the other is more supernatural by nature.
