Madam Secretary season 5 episode 3 spoilers: Elizabeth in Fashion Week
For the specific duality of this particular episode, just take a look at the attached synopsis:
“The Rake”– Elizabeth flies to Fashion Week in Milan to face off against the Chinese Foreign Minister over an anti-sweatshop treaty in the aftermath of a tragedy. Also, Daisy struggles with feelings of fear and pessimism over her baby’s future, under the threat of rising nationalism in the wake of the attack on the White House, on MADAM SECRETARY, Sunday, Oct. 21 (10:30-11:30 PM, ET/10:00-11:00 PM, PT) on the CBS Television Network.
This does give you a pretty good sense of how different the public and private missions here are. On the surface, Elizabeth is supporting some of the best fashions and designers in the world; yet, at the same time she is fighting to make a better life for some of the people responsible for making these clothing. While on the surface it may not seem like the United States has any jurisdiction on how employees are treated in other countries, just remember this: These are countries who are importing clothing to America. The United States has an ethical responsibility here, especially since the treatment of foreign workers often ends up being an important cog in trade discussions. It also can end up being a talking point in elections depending on the particular candidate running.
