Could Black Mirror season 5 allow viewers to choose their own endings?
According to a new report via Bloomberg, one of the episodes of Netflix’s hyper-ambitious, tech-is-destroying-the-world series is going to be giving you an interactive episode coming up where viewers get to decide at least some components of the story. This isn’t necessarily an unheard-of concept in the world of entertainment, but it’s still fairly fresh when it comes high-quality television series for adults. The Netflix format does enable this to happen in a way that it cannot with other television shows, and it almost harkens back to movies like Clue that debuted with alternate endings depending on the theater you attended.
As for whether or not we think that this is a great idea, it really doesn’t hurt anything to try! Black Mirror is the sort of show that really does lend itself to a great deal of experimentation, and we think that ultimately, that is precisely what the streaming service is doing here. If this episode turns out to be a dud, there are some other ones viewers can enjoy and they can never do it again. There are just only so many shows that can do something like this because the majority of stories have to rely on a specific ending in order for the course of things to really make sense.
The new season of Black Mirror could premiere as early as the end of this year, but for the time being, nothing is confirmed. The team behind the scenes with this show tends to be a little bit more secretive than almost any other out there.
