Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on Brett Kavanaugh, Christine Blasey Ford
Oliver of course wished that he could talk about other things tonight, whether it be the Flyers’ new mascot Gritty or Donald Trump insisting that members of the UN were not laughing at him. Yet, the Kavanaugh – Dr. Ford testimony in front of the Senate was the biggest story of the week and it really wasn’t even close. This is why there could’ve easily been a full hour all about it, whether it be the prosecutor’s comments, Orrin Hatch, or Fox News’ coverage of the event.
Oliver’s biggest coverage of the testimony came when he discussed at length some of Kavanaugh’s testimony, his shouting, and how it felt very much like someone who would get into a fight with another guy in Rhode Island who looked almost exactly like him. This was ridiculous, as was Kavanaugh talking about precisely how much he and the other people close to him really like beer. As a matter of fact, they really like beer. You’ve seen much of this discussion before. Then again, the real point of Oliver’s segment tonight was not so much giving you something new, but presenting something that you have seen before with his own signature commentary.
Then, there is also the subject of calendars, troubling patterns, and misrepresenting information about the night of the party.
It is really not that often you see Oliver focus all of his attention on a single subject nearly as much as he did here. Yet, at the same time we rather understand why he did here. The news of the past week discussed with this tone, and with this much detail, is really the sort of thing you rarely get in the news cycle. It was funny, but at the same time pointed and powerful.
