Maniac season 2 isn’t happened, mostly due to creative decision
Going into this series, it felt like it was the sort of thing that Netflix would want to have around for a while. After all, it stars two big names in Jonah Hill and Emma Stone, and it has received by and large positive reviews for its own unique brand of storytelling. There aren’t many other shows quite like it!
With that being said, it does seem as though the desire to keep the show precisely what it is just so happens to be the reason why the series isn’t coming back for more. Sometimes, limited series are best being left that way — it feels like this is a show that is going in the same direction of Sharp Objects, which opted to end things after one year rather than trying to dilute the overall product.
Speaking in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, show executive producer Patrick Somerville, who also wrote all ten episodes of the series, had the following to say on the subject:
This was always planned as a limited series, and I think that’s another reason why we had the freedom to have a more hopeful ending. A lot of times on TV, you have to throw your characters into distress again near the end to buy the next season, and we don’t have to do that. It is a tremendous amount of energy and imagination to just to make a new show, and so you do have this feeling of wanting to hold on and keep using it, because there’s so much imagination in there, but I think part of why Maniac had that improvisational feeling along the way was knowing that this is it. Let’s do it now, because this is what Maniac is.
If anything ever changes, we’ll be sure to let you know — but for now, we doubt it.
