Dietland canceled at AMC; no season 2 on the way

Dietland

AMC has decided to move on from Dietland — there will be no season 2 for the ambitious series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this decision was not an easy one — and even may come as a surprise to some, given that the story was already being worked on for next season. Yet, the series failed to find a large audience in season 1, even with a reasonably good promotional campaign and a companion series in Unapologetic with Aisha Tyler airing alongside it. Going into the series, it felt like AMC was really preparing for this to be their next big hit — they had Julianna Margulies, an edgy premise, and a show that felt tailor-made for 2018. It was a strong series creatively, but also one that seemed to be polarizing online (most critics turned in positive reviews).

What hurt Dietland in part was that AMC did not have full ownership on the property — add to this some weighty costs within the cast and this was a hard show to keep.

In a statement per the aforementioned publication, here is what the network had to say:

Dietland is bold, original and brave. We are beyond proud of our partnership with Marti Noxon, [stars] Joy Nash, Juliana Margulies, [producers] Skydance and everyone else involved in bringing Sarai Walker’s story to the screen … Similarly, Aisha Tyler and our friends at Embassy Row delivered a unique companion show that led with fresh voices and important topics. Dietland garnered critical acclaim and passionate fans, but unfortunately we will not be able to continue with a second season.”

This has not been a great past several months for AMC in their quest to find new hits. Andrew Lincoln is leaving The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead has shed viewers since writing out Kim Dickens, and Lodge 49 has yet to capture a big audience even though it’s a great show. The ratings for Preacher have slipped and the fate of Into the Badlands remains unclear after season 3.
