Doctor Who season 11: Chris Chibnall took job because of female Doctor decision

Doctor Who season 11

Back when Doctor Who season 11 first hired Chris Chibnall as the new showrunner, that was certainly welcome news. After all, we’re talking here about a fairly noteworthy British writer, a man who worked on such projects as Broadchurch, Law & Order: UK, Camelot, and even spin-off series Torchwood. Getting him on board apparently took a little bit of effort, and there were also some conditions to the hire.

What was one of the bigger ones? Having the Doctor be a woman for the first time ever. Speaking in a new interview with Digital Spy, here is what he had to say on this particular subject:

“Once Peter had decided he was leaving, the next Doctor was always going to be a female Doctor … That’s what Chris wanted, that was part of his conditions of doing the job.”

Chibnall got his wish in bringing on board Jodie Whittaker, who he worked with previously on Broadchurch. The role was not just given to her though, as there was a lengthy process that led to her eventually getting the job. All of this is leading towards the series’ premiere next month for what may be very well the most highly-anticipated Doctor Who episode since the 50th anniversary special. This is one of the rare times in which the series has been able to engage fans who are not just those who watch the series already. There is a whole new group of potential viewers out there who are excited about the show, and for many of them, we feel like there’s a reasonably good chance that they have not seen a single episode so far.

With this in mind, look for some of the opening episodes of season 11 to try and orchestrate some sort of balance between pleasing longtime fans of the show and also trying to introduce the world to newcomers.
