The Sinner season 3: Should there already be ideas?
We should note here that when it comes to commercial success — at least among live viewers and the 18-49 demographic — season 2 is down a smidgen from season 1. Yet, we have a hard time thinking that the network really had expectations of anything otherwise. Season 1 was billed as a limited series, and given that there was promotion around it having a beginning, middle, and end, it was easier to build more of an audience there. Technically, season 2 has a similar promotion going on, but it’s a little less obvious that it’s not purely a limited series when Harry Ambrose is still around.

So moving now into a possible season 3, what would USA do? We think that a good starting-off point is obviously keeping Ambrose around. While we assume that the series could work with a different lead, there’s no need to change it. Bill Pullman is phenomenal, and really, USA should want to keep him however long he wants to be a part of the series. The next order of business should just be finding a fantastic co-star for him. In season 1 he had Jessica Biel, whereas in season 2 he has Carrie Coon. This is an appealing show to performers in that it offers some prestige, and it’s a limited commitment that they can do for just a handful of months.
The biggest reason why USA should want more is simple: Quality. To date, season 2 is actually getting some better reviews than season 1, and that’s not something that we ever imagined would happen since critics tend to get more fickle of shows over time. While we don’t think The Sinner should come back unless there’s a good idea, and there is plenty of time for people behind the scenes to think of one.
