Power season 5 finale reaction: Boss on shocking shooting

Ghost and Angela

Tonight, the Power season 5 finale brought some of the biggest stories of the season home to roost, and it delivered in the process one of the biggest cliffhangers that we have had a chance to see on the series yet.

Warning: Spoilers from the finale ahead!

In the closing seconds of the finale, Tommy ends up shooting Angela after realizing the full extent of the betrayals against him, including that Ghost manipulated Tommy into eventually targeting his father Teresi himself. While itis Angela whose life is now on the line, executive producer Courtney A. Kemp made one very-interesting clear in her video discussion after the episode: Ghost was the original target.

Take a look at some of Kemp’s thoughts as a whole below.

On the general theme of the story – “The word that kept going through my head as I was writing this episode with [Gabriela Uribe] was ‘requiem.’ The idea that when something is over, we memorialize it … It’s about hope; it’s about ‘can we race to the end of this? Can we be smart? Can we be clever enough to get our way out of this?’

Of Angela’s attempts to save everybody – “Angela was the hero of this story on purpose, becuase Angela has been protecting everybody. She’s had Tariq, she’s had Tommy, she’s had Ghost’s back since the beginning. She is actually the center of the wheel and they’ve become all spokes. Can Angela save everyone? We’ve never had [Ghost, Angela, Tommy, and Tasha] in one scene … One thing that was very difficult because of so many lies was getting everyone together … This was the strangest group of bedfellows we could possibly get, and we really wanted the audience to experience that.”

On Dre surviving the finale – “If we are telling the story of Dre becoming Ghost 2.0, this is the next iteration. I think everyone wants Dre dead. However, Dre is more useful alive a lot of the time, and that is always about the chess game. You always have to think three moves ahead. Tommy gets his drug business online by sparing Dre’s life. That’s smart; that’s a different kind of thinking. That’s because he has collaborated with Angela, who is allowing him to be himself.”

On the closing sequence and Angela getting shot – “…[Ghost] has killed Terry, but he can’t tell her that. Clearly. It’s not just about ‘did you kill a witness?’; it’s also about ‘did you kill this man who was sleeping with Tasha? If you care that much, are you still in love with her?’ He still can’t say that a part of him is still in love with Tasha.

“For most of the season, Angela was going to be shot by Ghost. Gary Lennon, early in the season, said it should it be Tommy. I said ‘that doesn’t make sense to me,’ but as I was breaking and re-breaking this last episode, I [realized that] he was right all along. Tommy goes intending to shoot Ghost, not Angela. When he shoots, he is shooting at Ghost, but when he realizes that it is Angela, maybe this is even better. Ghost has broken Tommy’s heart, I don’t know if that is repairable.”
