Doctor Who season 11 premiere date finally revealed via BBC America
BBC America confirmed on Wednesday that the debut of Jodie Whittaker is going to air on Sunday, October 7, and it will be timed to coincide with the show’s debut in the UK. The premiere will repeat in what is going to be the show’s typical primetime timeslot later that same evening.
The notable news here is mostly that Doctor Who is moving to Sundays after years of being a Saturday staple. This is a move more than likely to capture more viewers, as there tends to be a much larger pool of available people on Sundays as opposed to some other times in the weekend. It is still a pretty massive change for this particular series, though, so we are going to have to wait and see if this actually works for the show.
Then again, you can sort of say the same thing when it comes to the series itself given that Doctor Who season 11 is taking a number of big risks. You have a new showrunner on board in Chris Chibnall and, to go along with that, a new star in Jodie Whittaker. This is also more of an ensemble series than in years past. We know that Whittaker as the lead is the thing that is generating the vast majority of the discussion and we understand that, but at the same time there is a lot of other variables that are going to have to be considered as potential risk factors in their own right.
We’ll see if everything pays off — for now, we certainly know that we absolutely want things to come up roses for this franchise for pushing things forward.
