Bull season 3: What will the impact of new timeslot be?
In much of the promotional material that we’ve seen to date about the new season, we’re seeing that the network is doing just about everything that they can in order to push the 10:00 p.m. Eastern spot and the new night. Basically, we think that they’re doing their best. (The image below from show executive producer Glenn Gordon Caron is just one example of what we’re talking about here.)
We do think that the network is expecting smaller ratings for the new season — after all, they have to be. There are typically fewer viewers available at 10:00 than at 9:00, and beyond that there’s a chance it could be a smaller lead-in. We’d love to see Magnum PI get off to a great start given all of the promotion it’s had, but there are no guarantees at the moment. All CBS is really hoping is that Bull can bolster a lineup that has seen a lot of viewer erosion over the past few years. They are completely remaking their Monday lineup as a result of this.
What we do wonder is this: We do think having a later timeslot could allow Bull to take a few more risks. We don’t think that the show’s going to change too much, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the writers try a few more risks with their cases and look to really push the strength of their individual stories more than ever. on Tuesdays sometimes Bull could get lost with the casual viewer (not us) because of it being surrounded by NCIS. It may have more of a chance to stand out at 10:00 p.m., and we hope that they take advantage of this opportunity to push the envelope with some cases and try a few different things structurally. We’ve already seen Bull shake things up a little bit in season 2, as they opted to make many of the cases more personal than ever before.
