Is Designated Survivor season 3 happening? The rumors are swirling…
According to Production Weekly, the once-canceled show is listed as starting production in Toronto soon, and with recent showrunner Keith Eisner back on board. All of this is interesting, given the talk that series star Kiefer Sutherland wanted production shifted to Los Angeles after the first two seasons. Meanwhile, there was talk at one point that the third season could have another new showrunner. The Production Weekly listing actually refers to Designated Survivor as The White House Project, which is probably just a move to discourage onlookers and to keep the secret a little bit longer.
If Designated Survivor is coming back, though, there are still questions as to how and who would be airing it. The most-recent rumor was that Netflix was a contender to acquire the series, which had a large international following — ironic, given that it’s a show about American politics. The series is not on ABC’s own primetime schedule, so we assume that it is probably not coming back there.
We’ve long felt that this is a series with a great deal of potential, but the biggest thing that it’s had working against it is just that there’s long been too many cooks in the metaphorical kitchen. The creative teams for this show have changed so much that there just hasn’t been any real opportunity for it to establish momentum. A lot of the other elements are there with a great cast and a story that should be very much capable of creating an engaging universe. We’re certainly in a climate where these sort of stories are relevant.
We’ll see if this news ends up being confirmed in the days ahead, but as of now, signs point towards the series finding a surprise second life months after its cancellation.

I’m hoping for Netflix so DS can get a bit edgier. So much potential that has been mishandled. I was hoping for LA for filming with actors and crew who didn’t make mistakes about how our system works. I heard the sets were all moved to LA.
