Hawaii Five-0 and what other crime shows can learn from its success

Hawaii Five-0

Through its first eight seasons on the air, Hawaii Five-0 has managed to achieve quite a number of great things, whether it be some incredibly action, strong seasons, and a devoted legion of fans.

To go along with all of that, though, it has also managed to do something that very few other shows have managed to over time: Deliver consistently strong ratings, and retain viewers in a way that very few other shows have. While season 8’s ratings were certainly down from the first few seasons, it is also a very different era now. Also, the series moved to Friday nights during its run, which is often the night that many shows go to die. Yet, CBS has developed a lineup that is incredibly stable with MacGyver, Hawaii Five-0, and Blue Bloods airing one right after the other. The Alex O’Loughlin series led the night for many weeks during the season in total viewers, and that is certainly something that they could do again in the future.

Moving forward now, let’s pose the following question: What is this show doing that other crime shows should be looking at? Are there some ways in which you can replicate its success to a certain degree? We think that in the end, the answer to this is both yes and no.

We think that the first thing that Hawaii Five-0 does so effectively is bridge the gap between comedy, drama, and action. You know when you watch the show that you’re going to have a good time, or at least you are during the episodes that you are intended to. The action scenes are top-notch, and when it does go dramatic it does so infrequently enough that the episodes pop. It’s an extremely versatile crime show and that helps it to constantly feel fresh.

In terms of its cast, we do think that it is aided by a rather impressive array of guest stars, whether it be a Joey Lawrence, a Dog the Bounty Hunter, or a Jimmy Buffett. You get so many surprising people on the show from different walks of life that there’s an added charm to it. While not every actor may want to work full-time away from their families in Hawaii, it certainly is tantalizing for an episode or two.

The final strength of Hawaii Five-0 really lies in the characters themselves. Over the past few years in particular the series has really worked to focus on who they are, their families, and their friends. You obviously want that case-of-the-week component to be there, but along the way it’s also important to continue to build and develop the people who are actually solving the cases.
