Should Madam Secretary season 5 feature other Secretaries of State
Of course, we do think that there is a case to be made for it — at least in terms of the ones since previously occupied the role. (The current one will and should be pretty busy.) One of the things about the series that is great is that it can take a hard look at politics without necessarily getting overtly political. That’s why you can have people associated with both Democratic and Republican administrations on the show and still have it work in a way that makes some sort of coherent sense. This show really celebrates the work that the Secretary of State does for the country, and that’s why we have always been somewhat torn on the idea of Elizabeth McCord seeking higher office. We don’t necessarily want something that makes it seem like the current position isn’t enough to sustain this show.
We do think that there are some notable people from this position who could appear in the future and be suitable in the role — think in terms of John Kerry or Condoleezza Rice. They offer up different viewpoints and have taken on some tough struggles. The value in bringing these people on is to give the show more authenticity and also allow Elizabeth a little more advice and help from people who know the position.
Of course, you also don’t want to do this so often that it is a perceived a stunt and because of that, it devalues the original intention that went into doing it in the first place. It’s a delicate balancing act, to say the least.
