Dietland season 2 renewal hopes for AMC series; will it happen?
When you think just in terms of the creative, we feel like AMC would want to bring the show back. After all, Dietland is offering them the sort of thing that many other networks really dream of: A topical, fascinating story about finding yourself amidst hardship, prejudice, and even in some ways extremism. It was a show really different from any other out there and the network went hard in its promotion for it. As a matter of fact, they even created an aftershow-of-sorts featuring Aisha Tyler.
Yet, we don’t think that the satirical drama series has lived up to some of the expectations – at least in the live+same-day ratings. It is averaging to date just a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 450,000 viewers, which puts it on the lower end for AMC originals that are not co-productions with other broadcasters like McMafia. What’s a little more troublesome than that is that the ratings have declined more and more as the season has gone on, with the most-recent episode generating just 285,000 live viewers.
If there is a silver lining here for the series, it is that Dietland probably has great binge-watching potential and could be watched by many after the fact. That could be something that ends up helping to save it. Yet, probably the most worrisome thing to us about its renewal prospects is the fact that there was no announcement made while at the TCA Summer Press Tour over the weekend. Other shows like Fear the Walking Dead and Better Call Saul were renewed, so if AMC wanted to offer up a vote of confidence here, they could have. There’s still plenty of time for them to renew Dietland, but clearly it is something that they want to think about a little bit more. There are still some reasons for hope for the series since live TV is only one piece of the puzzle these days, but there is also reason for concern.
