Altered Carbon renewed for season 2 by Netflix; Anthony Mackie new lead
Netflix has announced on Friday that the science fiction series is going to be back for another eight episodes, and to go along with that Anthony Mackie has been cast to play the new iteration of Takeshi Kovacs after Joel Kinnaman played him in the first season. Because of the nature of this show there are virtually unlimited possibilities to who can play the character of Kovacs, which in turn gives the writers and producers fairly unlimited possibilities when it comes to stories.
There are a lot of reasons to be excited about the future of Altered Carbon, with one of the biggest ones being that this is a series that does push the envelope and create interesting discussions about identity and ownership. It also can create a different, super-imaginative world every year. We know that for Netflix, the challenges with this show are twofold: They have to find a way to promote it that makes sense to the average viewer, and they also have to figure out a way in which to keep the show successful. Because it is such an ambitious show it also carries with it a hefty price tag; with that, there are probably higher expectations for its viewership than there are with some other shows out there. Getting Mackie on board for season 2 is certainly a positive step given that the series is bringing on board someone who has a very established following.
Based on the timing of this renewal announcement, we do think that we’re going to be waiting for a while to get some more details on a season 2 — odds are, it could be 2019 before some substantial information comes out on the series’ future.
