Reverie episode 7 review: What Mara learned within a dark reverie
While we’ve certainly seen Mara do her best to help a number of different people over the course of the series, there was something totally new about what she was able to do with Ehmet. This was a young man who suffered through tremendous torture within the world of a reverie … but it was not one that he himself asked to be in. Instead, what the episode showed tonight was another reminder that the military has taken some of their work with the technology in a particularly-frightening direction.
Ultimately, Mara was the one who was tasked with saving Ehmet against what were effectively real-world threats within a fantasy world, one where she had to use some of the teachings from Paul, which involved changing the human body’s perception of what is real and what is not, in order to help save him. Ultimately, it turns out that much of this was puppeteered by Monica from afar, who set things up so that Mara would encounter a bug within the system that would “accidentally” send her into the torture reverie. She was destined to find out about Ehmet, and on the other side of that destined in order to figure out the right way in which to save him.
Because of what she went through in this episode, freeing her mind and stretching her capabilities, Mara was also able to, in turn, stretch herself more than she had in the past. This is why, in the end of the hour, she was able to go to Chris and be a little bit more honest about herself, where she is, and what she’s going through — including see her murderous brother-in-law Ray, who is basically in a vegetative state in the hospital.
In the long-term, this could be the most-important episode of the season for Mara Kent. It just remains to be seen precisely how these changes will manifest themselves.
CarterMatt Verdict
When it comes to exploring the various negative uses for reveries, tonight’s new episode was absolutely a winner. We’re starting to understand even more the various nuances that come along with such technology.
Yet, if there is one criticism we would offer, it is questioning if it’s the right thing to move away from so much character development. While we had a big moment for Monica tonight, at the same time we haven’t gotten too much in the way of insight into Paul, Alexis, or Charlie in a good while.
