Who is America? episode 2: Will Sacha Baron Cohen maintain momentum?
Entering Who is America? episode 2, we have many questions — with the momentum of the Sacha Baron Cohen series being among them.
Going into the show, it’s clear at this point that there is a good bit of hype — there is a natural curiosity around every single thing that Cohen does, and in this case, also a lot of controversy. This is a series that is legitimately designed to be as controversial as humanly possible. Cohen’s entire goal is to stir the pot and get people talking; over the course of this series, he’s going to do that with a number of different interviews that are designed to stir up emotion and draw strong reactions.
Are a lot of people going to be upset? Absolutely. As a matter of fact, we imagine that there are many of people upset already. This show will make people uncomfortable and in some cases enraged; others may find it hilarious. We feel like both Cohen and Showtime know all of this before the show even premieres, and one of the reasons why they were so secretive about this show for so long was to try and capitalize on as much of the publicity as possible. Both Democrats and Republicans are meant to be targets in this show, but the order of the guests’ appearances remains to be seen. As a matter of fact, Showtime is being so hush-hush that they aren’t even giving any details in advance. This, for example, is the synopsis for Who is America? episode 2, which is exactly the same as the one for the premiere:
Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen explores the diverse individuals, from the infamous to the unknown across the political and cultural spectrum, who populate our unique nation.
We anticipate that there will be a ratings decline for episode 2 — with this sort of charged subject matter, that really feels inevitable.
