Save Shadowhunters reminder: We’re all in this together
How is it that actors and producers know nothing more about a show’s fate than fans? It’s a question that we hear asked all the time with many different shows, and there are times in which it’s rather hard to believe. This is something that executive producer Todd Slavkin reinforced further in a Twitter post last night. He continued to make it clear that he would like to do more of the show (he wouldn’t put in #SaveShadowhunters otherwise), but decisions as to the show’s future are ones that are made by executives and studios rather than producers and performers.
So why wouldn’t executives want to get their cast and crews more involved in this? It’s mostly just because these decisions are financial often more than they are emotional. Typically, we think that most networks out there want quality programming, and they all know already that Shadowhunters is a series that a great cast and strong writers. They also may assume that if the show were to get a season 4, it’d have a great story and be appealing to many diehard fans who are out there. Saving the show, at the end of the day, really isn’t about that. Instead, it’s more about finding a financial model that works and making sure there is some sort of feasible way for it to generate profits. Finding a way to figure that out is often a rather difficult thing to do but we know that there are attempts being made to figure it out.
If there is news about a season 4, what could happen is that the cast, crew, and producers could find out about it shortly before the fans — at some point, even minutes before. The same could be said for if the show ends up not moving forward. One way or another, it’s common courtesy to at least let the people who work on the show know what’s going on before an announcement is made publicly. We’re certainly excited to see what people like Slavkin and Darren Swimmer could do with a season 4, especially since they would be emboldened more than ever by the passion of so many fans. Hopefully, they get this opportunity — we’re all in this together, waiting and hoping for the best.
