Chicago Med character spotlight: what’s to come for Dr. Connor Rhodes?

When NBC’s Chicago Med ended its third season this past May many of the characters were facing the toughest moments of their lives. Changes were happening all around leaving the characters to think long and hard about their futures. For Dr. Connor Rhodes an important decision is to be made.

In the Season 3 finale, Connor started to second guess taking himself off the conjoined twins case as he watched Dr. Bekker, Dr. Latham, and the rest of the team operate. However, as he watched from the observatory room, another doctor asks him questions, and his prescient responses about what’s going on and what problems the surgeons are facing catches the attention of another observer. When Latham and Ava are faced with an unforeseen defect in one twin’s heart, Connor can’t stop himself and goes into the OR to offer a solution. It’s unconventional and risky, but Latham okays it, asking Connor to scrub in. After the separation is complete, the observer from before asks to speak with Connor. Later, Connor reveals to Ava that the observer was from Mayo Clinic and offered him a job. Ava is clearly upset having wanted a spot with them. This puts a strain on their relationship.

So what does Season 4 hold for Dr. Connor Rhodes?

His choice – The biggest and first obstacle Connor will have to face is whether or not he will accept the Mayo Clinic’s offer. It’s a very prestigious offer and one that Connor should definitely consider; however, we know that he enjoys his job at the hospital he’s at. He’s learning so much from Dr. Latham and he’s been given opportunities that he wouldn’t get a different hospital. In addition, there’s Ava, the woman he obviously has feelings for, but also doesn’t want to jeopardize their good working relationship for. She was clearly affected by Mayo Clinic’s offer having always dreamed of working there. So if Connor were to decide to stay there relationship will be awkward and definitely strained. So heading into Season 4, we are going to see what Connor has decided to do.

Personally, we hope he stays because he has a bright future at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center.

Relationship with Ava and his family – Connor is from a rich family with a traumatic past. His relationship with his father is a complicated one, especially when his father express his disapproval of his chosen career. Every once in awhile his father will show up and undoubtedly causes problems. His last appearance he attempted to fancy Ava, which made Connor visibly jealous and might have even made him realize he still holds a torch for her.

Heading into Season 4 we want to see more of his this complicated family dynamic because while it gives Connor a headache it often leads him to make a decision that helps him in some way. He becomes more dedicated and determined in his work and we want to see more of that.

Overall, there are many stories to be told and many directions the writers could take Connor and we can’t wait to see where the ultimately take it.
