Save Shadowhunters hits ten million tweets; behind the achievement
Think about that. Ten million tweets. That’s an expression of passion that is almost unprecedented since we are talking about a series that was canceled on June 4. The series hit the milestone last month, meaning that it took 27 days in order to get to this mark. That’s over 370,000 tweets a day using the hashtag, which is fairly close to almost the 400,000 live viewers that the series had on Freeform, on average, for the first half of season 3.
Here are a couple of other fun ways to break down some of these numbers. This marks over 15,400 tweets with #SaveShadowhunters included an hour, 257 tweets a minute, or more than 4 tweets a second. That shows that the movement is a global one, and that fans remain very much determined to save the show even weeks after the Freeform cancellation was announced.
So how much does this threshold help the show? We actually think it’s one of the biggest achievements made during the campaign to save the show so far. One of the things that you do need to remember is that network executives are often very busy, and with that they don’t have the time in which to look at every single tweet or thing that the fandom is doing to save the show. It’s often helpful to have some sort of big, headline-making announcement that they can look at and understand easily. That’s what the plane banner was, and the same goes for the billboard and the donations for the Trevor Project. Here, they can just see the number 10 million and have their jaws hit the ground.
What a prospective season 4 home for Shadowhunters needs to figure out is how to leverage social media in a way that really gets the word out there to more fans not just in America, and around the world. This is the new frontier for a show like this where money can be made and the series can be funded. If someone is willing to put forth the time and effort, they could have a very lucrative show on their hands.
