Why Saturday Night Live season 44 should keep most of its core cast

SNL

Moving into Saturday Night Live season 44, there are some rather interesting question marks when it comes to the core cast — after all, there are so many unanswered questions still out there! We have yet to hear all that much in terms of who is potentially leaving, and we’re getting a little closer to when some of that information could be coming out (but we’re not there just yet).

Given that there was no big announcement or send-off to any major cast member this past May, hopefully that means that there is no long-term cast member saying goodbye to the show. The featured players tend to flutter a little bit more in the wind, though the group of newcomers for season 43 was for the most part solid. Chris Redd and Heidi Gardner both were outstanding and while we didn’t see much of Luke Null, there’s potential there. He mostly suffered, like many cast members did, with a lack of screen time in the midst of all the cameos — plus of course the amount given to the host.

Beyond the newbies, we’re really hoping that nobody else ends up leaving, either. Melissa Villasenor is really just starting to show some of what she can do, and we’re starting to feel like Alex Moffat and Mikey Day have been there for ages even if they haven’t been. We’re also hoping that Pete Davidson, despite his significant rise in fame this summer, continues to be a permanent part of the show, as well.

Of course, the trade-off that would come with everyone staying would be a lack of new additions come September, and that is where things start to get a little bit tricky. We do think that there will be fewer hires moving into the fall, mostly because there are fewer departures. Personally, we wouldn’t be shocked if there is a surprise exit or two leading into one or two new faces — mostly because SNL does occasionally batch us off-guard like that.
