Halo TV series ordered at Showtime; can it work?
According to Deadline, this project will be run by Lone Star and Awake alum Kyle Killen, and the first episode will be directed by Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ own Rupert Wyatt. Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television is also going to be involved.
In a statement, Showtime President and CEO David Nevins had the following to say about this series being ordered:
“Halo is our most ambitious series ever, and we expect audiences who have been anticipating it for years to be thoroughly rewarded … In the history of television, there simply has never been enough great science fiction. Kyle Killen’s scripts are thrilling, expansive and provocative, Rupert Wyatt is a wonderful, world-building director, and their vision of Halo will enthrall fans of the game while also drawing the uninitiated into a world of complex characters that populate this unique universe.”
Do we think that this series could work? That’s a really interesting question just because of the fact that there is such a dodgy track record of other adaptations that we’ve seen over the course of the past several years. We certainly think that the action sequences will be top-notch, especially since Halo has a unique visual aesthetic. One of the larger questions that we have beyond this is simply whether or not the story can match up to it.
It certainly makes sense as to why Showtime would want this, largely because Halo is one of the biggest video-game franchises of all time. It absolutely makes sense that this is something that the network could want.
