Timeless season 3: Looking at possible under-the-radar contenders
For the sake of this particular article, though, CarterMatt wants to look at some possible under-the-radar contenders who may not be getting a ton of consideration, but remain interesting possibilities as a new home for the show.
Crackle – This free, ad-based streaming service is owned by Sony — and, of course, Timeless is a product of Sony Pictures TV. We’ve wondered for some time why the company doesn’t put more attention to this service, which has shows like SuperMansion and used to be the home of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee before it moved over to Netflix. Timeless would be a huge asset to the service given that it would bring many new viewers to it who have probably never watched a Crackle series before. However, the main question that comes with this is whether or not Crackle could adequately monetize a show like Timeless using their current model — there’s a reason most other streaming services are subscription-based.
YouTube – This is a possibility suggested by Sony TV’s own co-president Chris Parnell recently, and it’s intriguing in the sense that everyone out there already uses YouTube. However, many of the people who use it are not used to paying for it. We do think that there’s a lot of money for everyone to make here, but the primary issue is convincing YouTube of that given that their philosophy with premium content to date seems to be to produce more home-grown shows.
Charter – This is one that many may not even be aware of as a possibility, but the cable provider has been looking to get more into original programming as a way to keep people from cutting their cable subscriptions. They recently picked up the Bad Boys spin-off LA’s Finest, and getting Timeless could lead to a boost in their subscribers. Yet, we don’t think this would be ideal for many fans, given that changing a cable subscription just to watch one show is not an easy thing to convince people to do.
Apple – We’re watching the company closely simply because they have an upcoming streaming service and they’re investing millions upon millions into creating content. While there are still many details to be worked out here in terms of possible subscription costs and accessibility, Timeless is the sort of show that could bring attention to it right away.
All of these possible homes are longshots, and we do think that the leading contenders are still the ever-familiar trio of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon alongside possible cable destinations like a Syfy or a History. Still, we do want to make it clear that there are many more possible candidates out there for shows than you would assume.
