Big Brother 20 premiere twists discussion: The tech theme continues

Based on much of what we’re seeing in terms of Big Brother 20 promotion, this entire season could basically be summarized by CBS bowing to an iPhone. This is a season that seems to be all about tech, about social media, and about the relationship that the show has with the internet. It’s certainly a fascinating way for the show to lean given how much of the internet can be used for evil just as much as it’s been for good.

Yesterday, we shared with you an interview with Julie Chen in which she teased that there will be involvement from past houseguests in the season somewhat. Meanwhile, we also discussed the house tour and some of the interesting features that are present there this year — including a twist when it comes to the video screens that actually could change the game depending on how the Head of Household chooses to use them.

Today, we want to take a quick look at some of the first twists, which were suggested in a new press release via CBS for the three-hour, two-night premiere that starts on June 27 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern:

The competition kicks off immediately on premiere night with three challenges that will yield a game-changing power – and two unprecedented punishments. In addition, a new tech-themed twist, the “BB App Store,” will be unveiled in the first Sunday episode, July 1 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT), when America will have a chance to get the Houseguests trending, resulting in power apps or punishments that could crash their game.

What could this game-changing power be? We would imagine that it could lead to someone going home right away, or someone finding a way to earn safety for the first few weeks. They could also be tied to giving up these punishments. We know that CBS has no problem sending someone home right away, but if there is no returning player this season a la Paul, it’s possible that they don’t have to eliminate someone night one.

As for the BB App Store, we think of this mostly as a modified version of the MVP twist or America’s Care Package — with the difference being that America may also have the power to punish people. There are some things that we like about this, including the sense of paranoia it puts into the house. Yet, we also hate that it can make players start to play more towards the cameras and keep them from being overly authentic. At least with this season there is no clear ringer in terms of getting all the votes right away — while there are people like Angela who have an Instagram following, at least she’s not a former player or a “social media mogul” going into the game.
