America’s Got Talent: Amanda Mena gets Mel B’s Golden Buzzer
With that in mind, we had to assume that this was going to be a kid … and possibly a kid singer, given that’s the sort of thing we often see on this show.
Let’s go ahead and introduce you now to the Golden Buzzer recipient herself: Amanda Mena. Her family came to America from the Dominican Republic and while she’s immensely talented, she suffers from shyness — in part, because of some bullying that she’s suffered in the past. (There’s the link to what we discussed a little bit early.) She also does have a reality TV history, after performing on La Voz Kids (a Spanish-language version of The Voice) in the past.
Is she a great singer? Absolutely. Her audition song was “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” This is a pretty common reality TV audition song, but she has some great range and stage present — also, some of those high notes!
Now, of course, there are going to be critics who say that it’s another kid singer getting another Golden Buzzer. We do think that she is very good, but is she distinct enough to win this whole show? That’ll be up to viewers down the road. We do wish that there were more non-singers that got Golden Buzzers, but we’re not going to sit here and say that Amanda wasn’t worthy. Ultimately, it’s America’s votes down the road that matter more than anything else. For Amanda moving forward, it’s going to be all about song choice and we hope that she gets to do a few numbers that are a little more current and exciting.
