Poldark season 4 episode 2: Who died?
Still with us? Then let us discuss the downfall of one Hugh Armitage from the series. Josh Whitehouse is officially done with the series after his character died at the end of tonight’s episode. He had been sick for some time, really to the point where it was clear he wouldn’t make it out of the situation. We weren’t sure it would happen this week, but it did the moment that Ross won the election.
In losing Whitehouse from the series at around this point, what it does mean is that Poldark is losing one of its most-heartfelt performers. Yet, it also means that he will always remain a fond memory in the mind of Demelza Poldark. She cared for him deeply and there were at least times when she felt he was providing something for her that Ross did not. His death, in some ways, immortalizes him in the way in which it was suggested tonight. It’s a big loss from a narrative standpoint, even if Hugh as a character was hard to love just because of his repeated advances towards Demelza.
As for what we’d love to see Whitehouse do next, wouldn’t it be great to have him play someone against type? Instead of being a soft-spoken romantic, how about seeing him in a role that is significantly more bold and brash? That is one novel thought. Story-wise, his death represents a chance for the show to move forward to some other subjects … at least consciously. Things will likely remain in the subconscious for some time to come.
