Claws season 2 episode 2 review: Desna’s viral video; Dean’s big move
Earlier on in the episode, we saw a pretty clear reminder that Zlata was a very different sort of crime boss than Uncle Daddy ever was — she was demanding, and with that pushed her into figuring out a way to do something, and fast. This did eventually lead to her coming up with one of the most ridiculous semi-viral videos ever. We love the fact how the show considered one retweet to be a big deal, but eventually it did actually turn out that Desna’s plan for the clinic was right. She succeeded … at least in ensuring that she was okay for the time being.
Admittedly, though, the story that was the most compelling to us here was seeing Dean make the decision to propose to Virginia … and at the abortion clinic, no less. This was the second straight blindside that Dean and Virginia laid on her tonight, as Desna also just figured out that Virginia was pregnant. Harold Perrineau is fantastic, and to go along with that his scenes with Niecy Nash are pretty darn electric.
Of course, in the aftermath of Dean’s decisions we were in a situation in which he has to be prepared to step up and enter a new phase of his life — given that we are talking about someone with autism, that is rather different. (One of the most memorable moments of the episode was Virginia, after accepting Dean’s proposal, telling the anti-abortion crowd outside the clinic that they still “D&C’d that b—h.”)
The brawl
Somehow, much of this may pale in comparison to what we saw at the end of the episode in terms of an epic fight that started with square dancing and ended with fists and hair extensions flying. From Jennifer’s perspective we understand much of this — it was about betrayal and about hurt. She’s never had the best mother but seeing her involved in some sort of sexual tryst is another level of awful.
The moment that Desna got involved and Uncle Daddy had to rush in to break things up, you knew things were officially on the edge.
CarterMatt Verdict
Overall, Claws season 2 episode 2 gave us a dramatic episode that was certainly everything that you would expect from the show at this point — there were many funny moments throughout the episode but, in the end, this was an episode with a lot of devastation in it. Seeing Jennifer completely distraught at the end of the fight is a good example of how Claws does drama.
Perhaps the most notable thing moving forward is that Desna, even with the clinic’s sudden success, is far out of the woods when it comes to Zlata. There is inevitably so
