Supergirl season 4 promotes Jesse Rath to series regular

Brainiac

Here’s a bit of Supergirl season 4 news that we certainly did not see coming — Jesse Rath, who plays Brainiac-5 on the series, is set to be a series regular!

This announcement comes after the character recurred over the course of the third season, but with him being a part of the Legion of Super-Heroes from the future, our inevitable guess was that he would find his way back there at the end of the season. That is not actually the case here, apparently. Brainiac is going to be around for a while still, probably without all of the makeup given trying to put all of that on every day seems to be more or less a nightmare. (We’ve already seen Brainy without the makeup

In a statement via Deadline, executive producers Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller have the following to say about the promotion:

“We love the character of Brainiac-5 and can’t imagine anyone but Jesse Rath in the role … He brings such fun, heart and brilliance to Brainy and we’re so excited he’s joining the cast as a series regular for season 4. We have a lot of great Brainy stories to tell.”

Despite our surprise over the promotion, we are immensely happy about it given that this is one of the best additions to the show this season, save for maybe Samantha Arias / Reign. Brainy’s such a fun character with a natural curiosity, and he seems to be both loyal and caring to the world around him. With there being the potential for some sweeping changes at the end of this season, it should be nice to have someone like him to explore some different aspects of being a superhero. There’s certainly a fish-out-of-water element for him given that he comes from such a different timeline with so many different rules.
