The Originals season 5 episode 8 review: Klaus, Elijah try to let go
For starters, one of the biggest surprises that we got to see tonight within the Mikaelsons’ trapped chamber of memories was Hayley! She may not be alive, but at least the writers are not forgetting her. Seeing these memories was painful for Klaus, and they serve as another reminder that he is all Hope has now. Her desperation for him to be a larger part of her life is one of the reasons why he and the other characters are even now in this predicament.
Where things get a little bit more volatile is when the first major surprise came out: Elijah was intentionally repressing his memories for the sake of keeping everyone there. As it turns out, he has another motivation at the moment: Saving Antoinette. He made a vow to the Mikaelsons, but he also made a vow to her. His memories were stored at the end of a white hallway and the moment all of this became clear, the big push for this episode started to become figuring out the right way in order to retrieve them.
It was nice to get Kol and Rebekah as a part of this story, mostly because it gave The Originals the sense of family that it needed for this episode. Yet, we also like the fact that the two characters woke up from the trap before the end, meaning that it was Elijah and Klaus who were there at the end to break the door down. It was these two who managed to make it to the other side and bring the real Elijah back — as you would imagine, this was painful.
On the other side of Elijah getting his memories back, Klaus was able to give him a cure for Antoinette. He came to her with a remedy and following that, she has an opportunity to actually get better. Yet, he didn’t think there was an opportunity for the two to be together anymore. “Forgive me” was the final word he said before walking out the door. He then went to Hayley’s bayou grave to grieve the way in which he wasn’t able to.
Meanwhile, for Rebekah she yearned for a little bit of closure. She wanted nothing to be human, and it was up to Marcel to deliver a pep talk to her and a promise that the two could experience the world together.
Klaus ended his episode taking look at some old letters from Hayley, ones that contained photos of his daughter. The sense of loss in Joseph Morgan’s eyes was nothing short of phenomenal
CarterMatt Verdict
Overall, we would say that The Originals season 5 episode 8 was the perfect way to see Elijah get his memory back. This was painful in all of the ways that you would want it to be … not that we wanted it to be painful. This was an episode about understanding and in its wake, very few things about the show will be the same.
