The Amazing Race 31 filming begins; Survivor, Big Brother alum taking part
Show host Phil Keoghan confirmed this news today, the same day that production is officially kicking off on the new season. Take a look at the video below for some more of his thoughts on the matter.
As for some of our own personal thoughts on the matter, it’s easy to be torn about this. The reason why this is happening is because the ratings for The Amazing Race 30 were higher after Jessica Graf and Cody Nickson were cast in it; regardless of whether or not you want to claim they were the reason why, ultimately it does not matter to CBS. They were at least a potential factor and the network knows that some of their reality stars have huge fanbases. That is probably true for Big Brother alums more than just about anyone else.
Do we still think that some classic viewers of The Amazing Race are going to be upset about it? Sure, but we would say in response to this that were it not for moves like this, it’s certainly possible that we don’t get future seasons at all. If this helps to expose the show and its fantastic format to people who haven’t seen it previously, that is very much worthwhile. In the end, we do want to see a season down the road that adheres more to the show’s classic format — which we have not actually seen for quite some time. The past few seasons have had their own variations of different twists and featured casts that different very much from the norm.
