The Defenders season 2 not being planned — at least for now
In a new Reddit AMA promoting Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger premiering on Freeform tonight, Marvel television head Jeph Loeb said that another season is “not in the plans right now, but you never know” what the future will hold. (He was also noncommittal about a number of other subjects, but made it clear that there were plans for more of a defined costume in Iron Fist season 2.)
Personally, we don’t think that The Defenders season 2 is really needed — mostly because the first season already provided that experience. Also, we’re not entirely sure that everyone really meshed together. It’s hard for an experiment like that to really meet expectations unless you really have an exceptional villain. As good as Sigourney Weaver was, we’re not sure that the story ultimately lived up to our hopes.
Moving forward, what we would prefer to see is a different sort of team-up dynamic, one where there were smaller crossovers alongside the Netflix version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For example, it would be interesting to see characters like Luke Cage pop up in Daredevil a little bit more — you don’t need to get all four characters in the same spot, but there’s something interesting about throwing them in occasionally in order to suit the story.
For now, remember that the next season of Luke Cage is premiering later this summer and there’s another season of Iron Fist on the docket for not too far in the future. If you love all things Marvel and Netflix, it’s clear that there is quite a bit for you to look forward to seeing.
