Shadowhunters season 4: Can the series be saved?
Let’s kick things off by saying this — we’re never in the business of giving anyone false hope. If we didn’t get the sense that there were parties fighting behind the scenes to get more new episodes, we wouldn’t be offering this sort of article at all. Even with that, the majority of shows that get canceled stay canceled. Any effort to save a show needs to be done with an underdog mentality in mind.
Now, it is clear that the Shadowhunters cast and crew are all fighting in order to get another season of the show — we’ve seen that on social media via Harry Shum Jr., Katherine McNamara, and others. Having a two-hour series finale is nice, but we know for some, that just won’t cut it. The problem here, though, is rather simply that if there is going to be another network or streaming provider that picks up the show, Freeform can’t end it in such a definite way that leaves nobody else the ability to tell more stories. The conclusion of Shadowhunters: The Final Hunt is actually important in that sense to the future of the show.
In terms of possible suitors, Netflix is an obvious contender just because so many countries worldwide already have the rights to the show. Yet, don’t abandon Hulu or Netflix as possibilities here, either. The ideal home for Shadowhunters is one that will be able to profit off of the show’s primary demographic of young adults — what makes Netflix a little difficult is that so many Shadowhunters fans probably have it and we’re not sure how many new subscribers they will gain. Having Hulu air new episodes in America, meanwhile, is an intriguing possibility.
For now as fans, though, the best thing to do is not to get caught up on just a single suitor. Try to spread your reach as far as possible using #SaveShadowhunters and work to create a movement that is fun, positive, and of course MASSIVE. Shadowhunters has always been a show popular on social media and with that, there needs to be a new home that can leverage a platform like Twitter to its own gain. Television is a business in the end, and a new suitor needs to be able to monetize the show.
