NBA Finals 2018: Nayah Damasen performs National Anthem for Warriors, Cavaliers

ABC 2018 Fall Schedule

Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers is airing on ABC Thursday night, and leading up to it was (of course) a National Anthem performance.

The young woman performing the Anthem tonight is a young teenage singer by the name of Nayah Damasen, someone who has performed the song in the past for Warriors games and with that, has become somewhat of a good-luck charm. We’ve seen many sports teams over the years look more towards this as something that they want to do for big games as opposed to bringing in big stars — it may just be their way of being superstitious, or making sure that they have a great performance of the Anthem rather than some sort of Fergie situation.

For those who think Nayah looks familiar, she has appeared on some other ABC shows over time including Modern Family and Grey’s Anatomy.

As for her performance…

There’s nothing to criticize here! This was a strong, emotional take on the Anthem by someone who clearly knows it best. That’s something that we’ve never quite understood for some sporting events: People who hire an Anthem singer who isn’t altogether familiar with doing the song for big events. Isn’t that just setting yourself up for bad publicity?

This was a strong, traditional take on the song, and it does set things up for the big game that is coming tonight. We’ll see if she ends up making another appearance or two this year for the Finals — we certainly wouldn’t be surprised given everything that we’ve said already about superstition.

Oh, and for those wondering, Warriors in 6 — we do think they have a lot more firepower than the Cavs, even though they are probably going to drop the ball for a couple of games.
