The Bachelorette: Becca Kufrin on Garrett Yrigoyen Instagram allegations

It only took a matter of a few short days after the premiere before The Bachelorette as a show came under fire for the second straight season for a contestant’s bad behavior on social media. This time around, it was contestant Garrett Yrigoyen who finds himself in the midst of controversy for allegedly liking Instagram posts that were transphobic, anti-feminist, declared Parkland student David Hogg to be a crisis actor and above all else offensive. While he didn’t make any comments himself, for many the “like” is a symbol for supporting that particular viewpoint. Yrigoyen has now deleted that account, and neither he nor the series itself have commented on the matter since.

However, Bachelorette Becca Kufrin herself chose to speak out on the issue in an interview with Mario Lopez on Extra, and in that she advised viewers to exercise caution on the subject rather than rushing to judgment:

“I mean, here’s the thing. Is it fair to judge someone based on who they follow, what they like? That’s not being very open-minded if you’re just going to start to discriminate on someone’s thoughts … I just want everyone to watch it back and to get to know these guys and to get to know me for who we really are and not social media, because that’s just a small glimpse into a person and it’s not always reflective of who they are.”

Ultimately, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that certainly includes Garrett, regardless of whatever we think about his use of social media. Where things get problematic is that in the event he has these extreme views and has liked a number of hateful posts online, shouldn’t that be something that the series lead should get a chance to know about in advance? If he makes it far there’s a chance she is falling for a very specific version of someone without seeing the full picture. It’s almost akin to someone hiding a certain part of themselves during filming and then blindsiding them about it after the fact. It’s on the show for their vetting more so than Becca, who is in a tough position when it comes to giving an answer here since she can’t say anything that spoils the show positively or negatively.
