SNL Wishlist: The clear demand to see Gillian Anderson as host
Meanwhile, another of the notable names mentioned many times over to us was The X-Files and Hannibal actress Gillian Anderson, and certainly for good reason. Not only are we speaking here about one of the best actresses of the past couple of decades, but also someone who is incredibly funny. If you haven’t seen her in anything super-comedic, all you have to do is watch and listen to some of her old interviews. (Her Nerdist Podcast, which we like to think help make the X-Files reboot happen, is a personal favorite of ours.)
Gillian would be great hosting the series, largely because she’s game for almost anything, she’ll tackle the live environment without a problem, and we can absolutely picture some geniuses sketches for her in our head alongside Kate McKinnon, who we know to be a notable fan of hers and then some. (Anderson also makes an appearance alongside McKinnon in The Spy Who Dumped Me, premiering in movie theaters this summer.)
Given the connection that is there now with McKinnon, we like to envision in our head that a hosting gig is now very much possible … though we also do realize that a single cast member of SNL does not have an extreme amount of say in who ends up getting to host the show. We just think that Gillian would be perfect for it, as do many readers, and it’s really quite shocking that she has not hosted before. Even if American viewers may not be necessarily all that aware of some of her great work beyond some of the shows we’ve mentioned, maybe this would be a great opportunity for them to explore some of her other roles — she’s exceptional on The Fall, for example. She’s also got another great series coming up in Sex Education, which she is currently working on right now.
If you want Anderson to host SNL in the future, the best thing you can do is keep a conversation going about it. While NBC does not necessarily book a lot of familiar faces from the TV world to host, they have done that with a little more regularity as of late and Anderson is certainly a more than worthy host for it.
