The Fosters spin-off featuring Callie, Mariana to be titled Good Trouble

While the upcoming The Fosters spin-off featuring Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) doesn’t have a premiere date yet, it does have a title: Good Trouble.

There are some political undertones within this name in that “good trouble” is a phrase that has been used often by Congressman an activist John Lewis both in speeches and in interviews in reference to making a difference. It’s important to shake things up and to try and enact change, even if it does at times make people uncomfortable. There may be consequences at times, but so long as you focus on the pursuit of the greater good, hopefully you will see some results. Callie in particular has been a young activist through much of The Fosters and that should continue into the new series. Per Freeform, the show will focus on these characters “as they embark on the next phase of their young adult lives in Los Angeles.”

Freeform announced today that John M. Chu will direct and executive-produce the first episode; meanwhile, Mitchell and Ramirez are executive producers alongside The Fosters execs Bradley Bredeweg, Peter Paige, Jenna Johnson, Jennifer Lopez, and others.

In a statement, Johnson, Paige, and Bredeweg had the following to say about the new series:

“We’re seeing millennials in this country doing extraordinary things, making noise, taking action.  Stirring up ‘Good Trouble’ as they grow, strive and struggle to make the mess of their early twenties into the message … As Callie and Mariana venture to Los Angeles to start their adult lives and embark on their separate but intertwined journeys to change the world, they’re going to have all the ‘Good Trouble’ they can handle.”

The idea behind this series seems to be a sound one in that while we hear often about young people trying to make a difference, there are not many scripted television shows really reflecting that. Often, you see sitcoms trying to make the actions of young people into a joke; the reality here, though is that these young people are going to help to shape the future of the world.

The Fosters proper will conclude with a three-episode event this summer. Stay tuned for more news regarding that.
