Saturday Night Live cold open spoofs The Sopranos with Donald Trump

Saturday Night Live review

With this weekend being the final Saturday Night Live of the season, we anticipated big things from the last cold open. It was easy to also make a few assumptions, including that it would be political in nature and would probably feature some cameos — after all, this is the cameo era of SNL where these sorts of things tend to happen on a fairly regular basis.

So how did things start off this week? It was with Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump, but in a slightly surprising environment: A diner, where he was waited on with Heidi Gardner. Minutes after that, “Don’t Stop Believin'” started to play and it was clear that we were getting a Sopranos finale spoof. Rudy Giuliani (Kate McKinnon) came in. Soon after that, Michael Cohen (Ben Stiller) stopped by for a pep talk. Then, you had Donald Trump Jr. (Mikey Day) and then Eric Trump (Alex Moffatt) outside via toy tricycle.

Then came some of the bigger cameos, including Robert Mueller (Robert de Niro). Trump got super-paranoid that Mueller was there, and at this point it was clear that we were getting close to the moment where things were going to fade to black.

As an idea, this was super-fun and a way to bring in most of the key players from this season. As far as execution, there was nothing left to do once everyone turned up. It was a parade of cameos that was fun for that, but we have no interest in every watching it again. Sketches need more than just surprise cameos that aren’t really all that surprising since you’ve seen them in the past. We’re also somewhat disappointed that there was no attempt to take advantage of having Tina Fey in attendance as the host. She had to be able to play someone, right?
