The Law & Order: SVU season 19 finale is airing on NBC come Wednesday night and at the center of the two hours is a harrowing event: A live stream. A stream is broadcast out to countless people showing what is an intense hostage crisis. A man is being held at gunpoint and, based on the sneak peek below, there are still a number of different question marks. For example, it’s not entirely clear just what the actual motive here is. Meanwhile, we do not quite know just how determined this woman is to kill her hostage, or if she just wants to torment him.

Either way, it’s clear that the stakes are high and the SVU team doesn’t have a whole lot of time. The unfortunate thing is that whoever planned this entire incident out did so in a way that they would be hard to trace. The sneak peek shows that they are able to trace back the phone to a specific address … but it’s also hard to know that this crisis is taking place at this said address.

What makes this storyline relevant now? Much of that traces back to some of the dangers with technology, especially many live-streaming platforms. There have been many gruesome things that have happened via some of these over the past few years. One thing to also keep in mind with this episode is that SVU has a tendency to not have a case be about just one thing or one topical reference. Given that the final two episodes are linked to one another, it feels clear that there is going to be some other complication here that is not entirely clear at the moment.
