Shadowhunters season 3 midseason finale ratings: What do they mean?
Let’s start here by getting the bad news out of the way — these two episodes collectively generated in total a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic on average and close to 340,000 viewers overall. These numbers are down from the week before, but it does feel as though there is a pretty clear reason for that: Two episodes airing at once. We don’t think that this is necessarily the right thing for a show like this, since that’s a big time commitment for viewers to have to watch live. By comparison, they can check out these two episodes on a DVR or streaming down the line in only around an hour and a half. With younger viewers in mind we really think the best thing for Freeform is to only air one new episode a week.
While these ratings are down, we don’t think that they are down significantly to the point where we are worried about the long-term future of the show. A season 4 is aided by a number of other factors that aren’t quite apparent when it comes to the live numbers, including DVR viewership, international ratings, social traffic, and more. With that being said, if Shadowhunters starts to get to the point where it is averaging less than 300,000 viewers an episode live, that’s where the concern could start to creep in. Live ratings do still matter, though not as much as they once do.
Now that we are in the hiatus, now is the best time to get new viewers hooked! Convince your friends/family to give the show a shot and have them binge-watch the first couple of seasons We’re nearing the summer and that is the perfect time in which to have that happen.
