The Brave canceled at NBC; no season 2 despite fan support
This is the sort of news that we absolutely hate to report here at CarterMatt — after one season on the air, The Brave is canceled over at NBC.
In terms of the ratings for the first season, The Brave did struggle without The Voice as a lead-in. Thanks to that along with it ending earlier this year and not sticking around to sweeps that the series could be in relative danger of cancellation. Unfortunately, a vigorous campaign to save the show, including it winning the CarterMatt TV Madness tournament this year in a pretty incredible fashion (it beat out the two year champion in Outlander!), was not enough to keep it around for another season. That tournament win was one of our favorite moments covering TV this year, mostly because it was so great seeing so many different people fighting to save their shows that they all knew were in a high degree of danger.
Would we love to see it live on in some other form elsewhere? Certainly, but the reality seems as though that’s unlikely. This was a show produced through Universal Television, suggesting that if anyone had an incentive to save it, it was NBC. Granted, we do think it’d be a good fit over on USA … but that’s just stating our own opinion on the subject. We think that The Brave really could’ve built into something had it just had a little more time to build an audience and have people get on board with it. We started really noticing the show getting a groundswell of support in the second half of its first season; had it had another four or five episodes, maybe this could have amounted into something more. Unfortunately, we’re never going to know.
If there is no second life for The Brave anywhere else, what we’re hoping to see is the cast and crew find some other projects worthy of their talent coming up. Hopefully, this show exposed other showrunners and networks to some talent that shouldn’t be ignored.
