Elementary season 6 episode 2 review: Joan connects with her half-sister

Elementary season 6 episode 2

Elementary season 6 episode 2 did contain yet another case of the week, but we’ll be honest in saying that this isn’t going to be what sticks with us.

Instead, we do think that this episode is mostly a story about connections, and about Joan and her half-sister coming to terms with a lot of pain following the death of their father. The way that the writers played the relationship between Joan and her father was pretty close to perfect in this episode — there was no forced effort present here to try and force a relationship where there really wasn’t one. This was more about the two sisters coming together in the midst of tragedy and realizing that not only did he want the two to be closer, but that they wanted it for themselves. The circumstances were difficult and the ending bittersweet, but hopefully we will see this relationship progress in some new and interesting directions coming up — by this, we mean that hopefully we will see Watson’s half-sister appear again.

For Sherlock tonight, he continued to struggle when it comes to reconciling a part of what his life is now coupled with where it was last season before his health started to fail. At one point, he and Watson are working together in order to track down a stolen plutonium shipment in the midst of a dirty-bomb debate. Following that, he was working on some simple problem-solving in the form of a unicorn puzzle. He could’ve been angry or overly frustrated about it, but we rather appreciated his determination. Watson was there to help him through it, and while we wouldn’t say that this was a gut-punching story for Sherlock by any means, we do appreciate seeing the two off of the job as much as we can.

Surprisingly, there was not too much of a pickup in this episode on Michael, Sherlock’s new friend-of-sorts from the recovery community who has a rather dark secret of his own. This is clearly going to be an important part of this season, but the writers are at present a little more intent on establishing Sherlock’s recovery rather than rushing into what’s going on here.

CarterMatt Verdict

Overall, we will say that Elementary season 6 episode 2 was a solid mystery accompanied with some well-paced personal updates on Holmes and Watson. While this does not remain the flashiest show on television, we do still very much appreciate the methodical pacing of the storytelling and the way that the writers do their absolute best in order to ensure that every decision makes sense for the characters.
